Play Therapy

At Be Centre we use play therapy techniques when counselling children.  Children who have the opportunity to attend play therapy can create new ways of coping with upsetting events, past and present. They can be given time and space to acknowledge and get in touch with their feelings and emotions.

Why Play Therapy?

"Play Therapy is based upon the fact that play is the child's natural medium of self-expression. It is an opportunity which is given to the child to 'play out' his/her feelings and problems just as, in certain types of adult therapy, an individual 'talks out' his/her difficulties." Virginia Axline (Dr Axline is an acknowledged authority on the technique of play therapy in the treatment of emotionally disturbed children).

Play Therapy is the least intrusive form of counselling for children that creates a safe environment where trust develops, allowing children to express feelings, thoughts, experiences and behaviors.

Play Therapy is designed to help children to BE ALL THEY CAN BE!

Benefits of Play Therapy

Play therapy benefits children by enabling them to manipulate their world on a smaller scale, something that cannot be done in the child's everyday environment. By playing with specially selected materials, and with the guidance of a therapist, the child plays out his/her feelings, bringing these hidden emotions to the surface where s/he can face them and cope with them. The benefits of play therapy can include:
  • Creates or enhances healthy bonding in relationships
  • Defines healthy boundaries
  • Develops a sense of trust in self and others
  • Enhances creativity and playfulness
  • Facilitates a child's expression of feelings
  • Promotes appropriate behavior
  • Promotes self-confidence and a sense of competence
  • Reduces anxiety associated with traumatic events in the child's life
